    NIH Director???s Wednesday Afternoon Lecture

In her talk, Dr. Akil will discuss the challenges of understanding the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder at the molecular and cellular level and the surprising insights derived from genomics and human postmortem studies. She will describe how animal models and neuroscience studies at multiple levels (from genetic to behaviorial) can be used to test and validate new targets for treatment and/or as biomarkers of the illness. Her talk will also focus on the notion of "molecular organizers" that play a broad role in neuroplasticity, development, adaptation to the environment, and responsiveness to treatment.

    Immunology Interest Group

Dr. Yong Jun Liu is currently the CSO/ Head of Research and the Senior Vice President of R&D at Medimmune in Gaithersburg. Dr. Liu trained in China and the UK and was a senior scientist at Schering-Plough and DNAX. He then became the Director of the Center for Cancer Immunology Research at MD Anderson in Houston. Most recently he served as the director of the Baylor Institute for Immunology Research in Dallas. Throughout his career he has made a commitment to partnering clinical and basic immunology to great effect. Yong Jun has made many seminal discoveries and contributions in a wide range of immunology fields. He started out studying B cells, helping to define the germinal center reaction and identifying BCR and CD40 signals for affinity maturation. Next, he discovered plasmacytoid DCs, and has contributed to our further understanding of this cell type, including their mechanisms of type 1 IFN signaling (both via TLR7/9 and more recently defining cytosolic DNA/RNA sensors). He also defined a role for TSLP in Th2 and allergic inflammation.

    • - NIH/FDA (2015/06/10)
    • - Category : Conferences
The purpose of the workshop is to identify obstacles to RSV vaccine development, discuss approaches to alleviating them, and identify gaps in research that could be addressed to enable vaccine development. The meeting will also review the basic science and clinical data that will inform the regulation of products under development including, for example, immune responses to RSV primary infection and reinfection, and the physiology and kinetics of placental antibody transfer as well as discuss progress towards standardization of immunologic agents and assays. Lessons learned from previous clinical trials of RSV vaccines, and polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies used for immune-prophylaxis will be discussed to identify potential serological and clinical endpoints for upcoming pivotal trials.

    • - Steven Cole, Ph.D., University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine (2015/06/09)
    • - Category : National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH; formerly NCCAM)presents the Integrative Medicine Research Lecture Series. The series provides overviews of the current state of research and practice involving complementary health approaches and explores perspectives on the emerging discipline of integrative medicine. Steven Cole, Ph.D., is professor of medicine and psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine. Recent research has discovered that socio-environmental conditions may have an effect on human gene expression. In this lecture, Dr. Cole will summarize the developing field of social genomics, and its efforts to identify the types of genes subject to social regulation. Dr. Cole???s overview of this field of research will provide a concrete molecular perspective on how external social and cultural processes can interact with the human genome to shape individual trajectories of health, development, and behavior.

National Library of Medicine Informatics Lecture Series

There is an urgent need to translate genome-era discoveries into clinical utility, but the difficulties in making bench-to-bedside translations have been well described. The nascent field of translational bioinformatics may help. Dr. Butte`s lab builds and applies computational tools to convert hundreds of trillions of points of molecular, clinical, and epidemiological data collected by researchers and clinicians worldwide over the past decade, now commonly known as ???big data???, into new diagnostics, therapeutics, and insights into rare and common diseases. Dr. Butte, a bioinformatician and pediatric endocrinologist, will highlight how publicly-available molecular measurements to find new uses for drugs including drug repositioning for inflammatory bowel disease, discovering new treatable inflammatory mechanisms of disease in type 2 diabetes, and how the next generation of biotech companies might even start in your garage.

Atul Butte, MD, PhD is the founding Director of the newly-established Institute of Computational Health Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, and a Professor of Pediatrics. Prior to his new position, he was the chief of the Division of Systems Medicine and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University and Lucile Packard Children???s Hospital, where he has been a faculty member for the past decade. Trained in both Computer Science and Medicine at Brown University, Dr. Butte previously worked as a software engineer at Apple Inc. and Microsoft Corp., and received his PhD in Health Sciences and Technology from Harvard Medical School and MIT. He has authored nearly 200 publications, with research repeatedly featured in the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal and Wired Magazine. In 2013, Dr. Butte was recognized by the White House as an Open Science Champion of Change for promoting science through publicly available data. Dr. Butte is also a founder of several Bay Area biotech startup companies. He is also a member of the National Library of Medicine Biomedical Library and Informatics Review Committee.
