미국 정부는 Nanotechnology의 중요성을 인식하고 2001년의 분야 예산을 현재의 두배로 늘리기로 결정했으며, 이 기술을 특화하여 지속적으로 지원하기로 결정했다. 이 보고서는 이와 관련된 내용을 담고 있으며 미국 과학기술자문회의(National Science and Technology Council Committee on Technology)의 Interagency Working Group on Nanoscience(IWGN)이 작성하였다(2000년 2월 작성).
