===============================================================
The 2001 Materials Research Society Spring Meeting will be held April 16-20, 2001, in San Francisco, California, at the San Francisco Marriott and Argent Hotels. The meeting will include 33 symposia that highlight new advances in the understanding, synthesis, and application of materials in fields ranging from advanced integrated circuits to biomaterials.

The scientific sessions will include many new and developing areas of materials science as well as some well-established and popular topics. Symposia on electronic materials will bring us the state-of-the-art in molecular electronics, luminescence, wide-bandgap devices, and novel-oxide-based devices. Several silicon processing symposia will cover areas ranging from dopant-defect interactions in Si-through gate oxides, dielectrics, interconnects, and reliability-to a symposium on packaging. The fundamentals of thin films and surfaces will be addressed in several symposia on film growth, microstructural and surface evolution, deformation at small-length scales, and corrosion and oxidation. There will be a symposium on magnetic devices and data storage, as well as a new symposium on optical data storage. Interesting materials such as fullerenes and nanoparticles will also be well represented; and two symposia on materials characterization, featuring synchrotron radiation and electron microscopy, will be held. There will also be a symposium dedicated to materials modeling and, for the first time on the West Coast, a symposium on nuclear waste containment.

Symposium X: Frontiers of Materials Research will feature topics on the forefront of materials science. To complement the scientific sessions, tutorial sessions will provide a detailed introduction to particularly exciting areas of research. Also, the exhibit will showcase products of interest to the materials community.
