Synopsis:
Fludiazaiton is an important technology employed in a variety of industrial processes. It plays a major role not only in traditional industies such as coal combustion, oil refining and metallurgical processes, but also in the development of emerging technoligies such as materials processing and biotechnology. With increasing demand for sustainalbe development, its applications in energy, resource recovery and environment are being explored further. It has been estimated that over 5% of all published papers in chemical engineering literature deal with fluidization and its related subjects, making it one of the most reported fields in chemical engineering research.
On the other hand, fluidization is one of the most complicated unit operations in practice. Its typical particle-fluid two phase flow patterns exhiit nonlinear and nonequilibrium dynamic characteristics with heterogeneous flow structure. Therefore, its quantitative understanding and practical application constitute a challenge in science and engineering.
Although application of fluidization has been extended to a variety of fields and its fundamental research has been carried out for more than half a century, further efforts are still needed to explore its new opportunities, and to understand its mechanisum for realizing quantitative design and optimal operation of fluid-bed reactors. In addition, increasing attention to sustainable development has given rise to more and more opportunities for the field, and the advance of interdisciplinary sciences has further stimulated its fundamental research.

Fluidization for Sustainable Development is the tenth in the series. Previous Engineering Foundation Conferences on Fluidization were held in Asilomar, California (1975); Cambridge, England (1978); Henniker, New Hampshire (1980); Kashikojima, Japan (1983); Eisinore, Denmark (1986); Banff, Canada (1989); Broadbeach, Australia (1992); Tours, France (1995) and Durango, Colorado (1998). This series is now firly established as the preeminent forum by experts in the field.
In addition to all the common activities at the previous conferences, invited distinghushed scholars will highlight overviews on fluidization of the present century and prospects for the next century. Specail programs will also be arranged to celebrate this 10th event.
