Information Visualization: The Path from Innovation to Adoption

Ben Shneiderman, University of Maryland, USA

A decade of innovative information visualization research has begun to yield successful products, although many efforts have failed. This talk gives examples of what works and what doesn't. The main message is that complete polished solutions, tuned to the needs of specific industry users, are more likely to succeed. Design principles will be proposed and demonstrated with current systems.

Ben Shneiderman is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Founding Director (1983-2000) of the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory, and Member of the Institutes for Advanced Computer Studies & for Systems Research, all at the University of Maryland at College Park. Dr. Shneiderman is the author of Designing the User Interface: Strategies for Effective Human-Computer Interaction (1987, second edition 1992, third edition 1998). His 1999 co-authored book with S. Card and J. Mackinlay is Readings in Information Visualization: Using Vision to Think. Ben Shneiderman helped spawn the successful company Spotfire (www.spotfire.com), where he is a Member of the Board. He is an advisor for www.smartmoney.com where his treemap visualization is used for stock market data.
