Micro RNAs는 다양한 mRNAs를 표적함으로서 수 많은 생물학적인 과정을 조절하는 small non-coding RNAs인데, 최근에 다양한 인체 체액에서 상당히 안정된 형태로 검출되고 있다. 특징적으로 암 환자들과 건강한 정상인들 간에 비교 연구 결과, 특정 circulating miRNA가 암 시작과 증식과 관련된다는 것이 밝혀지고 있다. 암에서 miRNA 기반 바이오마커 연구가 점차 증가되는 가장 큰 이유가 miRNA 기반 선별검사의 비침습성 특징과 암을 검출하는데 있어서 특이도와 민감도가 높다는 장점이 있기 때문이다. 이 리뷰에서는 대표적인 암종에서 circulating miRNA가 진단 및 예후 마커에 적용되어 진행된 연구결과들에 대해서 중점적으로 소개하고 있다. 또한 miRNA가 혈액으로 방출되어지는 메커니즘에 대해서도 소개하고 있으며, 암에서 circulating miRNA를 확인하는 방법론과 전략들 그리고 암치료에서의 응용 가능성 등에 대해서도 소개하고 있다.
