현재 장내미생물에 관한 연구를 통해 장내미생물 군집이 인체의 건강과 밀접한 연관이 있다는 것이 보고되고 있다. 특별히 인체 장내 미생물군은 매우 다양한 군집과 생태계를 이루고 있지만, 그에 대한 이해는 아직도 부족한 실정이다. 특별히 본 분석에서는 활성 (Probiotic) 세균에 대한 연구결과들을 살펴볼 것이다. 음식물과 관련된 혐기성 활성 세균들은 일시적으로 장내 미생물 군집에 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 본 분석에서는 활성세균 중에서 특별히 lactobacilli 와 bifidobacteria 가 어떻게 장내 미생물 군집에 어떻게 영향을 주는 지에 대한 현재까지의 연구결과에 대해서 분석할 것이다. 또한 본 분석에서는 활성균이 어떻게 일시적으로 숙주에 영향을 줄 수 있는 지에 대한 최근의 연구결과들에 대해서 살펴볼 것이다.
