현재 미생물들이 어떻게 서로 상호반응을 하고 의사소통을 하는지에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 특히 분석기기의 발달에 힘입어 미생물이 분비하거나 합성하는 대사물질들을 연구하는 기술이 높아짐에 따라 분자레벨에서의 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 리뷰논문에서는 현재 미생물 연구를 위해 점점 더 사용가치가 높아지고 있는 질량분석기에 대하여 소개하였고 이러한 발전이 신약 개발과 어떤 연관성이 있는가에 대하여 토론하였다.
