오토파지는 세포내 노폐물 성분들을 제거해서 세포내 단백질들을 생성하는 데 중요한 역할을 하는 등 세포내 항상성 유지에 중요한 역할을 한다. 대부분의 퇴행성 뇌질환을 살펴보면 오토파지 기능에 문제가 있음이 밝혀지고 있다. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) 근위축성 측상경화증 (루게릭병)은 운동 신경의 선택적인 퇴화가 일어나는 치사율이 높은 질병인데, 최근 연구에 따르면 오토파지가 제대로 조절되지 못해서 나는 것으로 제안되고 있기에 본 분석물은 이런 관점에서 최신 연구 내용을 다루기에 분석의 의의가 있다.
