현재 건축물에서 에너지 효율과 열안락 기준은 지속가능하고 고성능의 건축물에 있어서 중요한 요소이다. 이를 위해 역사적으로 지구 전역의 건축물에 대한 건축, 유지 등에 대한 다양한 방법들과 다양한 건출물의 형태에 대해 제시하고 있다. 특히 지난 2세기 동안의 거주, 지역, 학술, 성, 박물관, 도서관, 극장, 도시지역 등 다양한 경우에 중점적으로 논하고 있다.
