오직 후천성 면역만이 면역 기억을 형성 할 수 있다는 일반적인 견해가 최근에 다른 국면을 맞이하고 있다. 후천성 면역이 결핍된 생물에서 선천성 면역 시스템은 재감염에 저항성을 나타낼 수 있으며 이를 "훈련된 면역 (trained immunity)" 또는 "선천성 면역 기억 (innate immune memory)"라 부른다. 훈련된 면역은 후성유전적 리프로그래밍에 의해 조절된다. 훈련된 면역의 발견은 새로운 백신의 개발 그리고 면역 결핍성 질병과 자가 염증 질병 치료를 위한 새로운 치료법 개발에 새로운 장을 열었다.
