질병예방 및 관리 센터는 지카바이러스 (ZIKV)가 선천적 소두증의 원인임을 확인하였다. ZIKV는 다른 5개의 인간 신경기형발생 바이러스에 포함되어 연구 초기단계에 있다. 그 외에 잘 알려지지 않은 인간 arbovirus가 있다. 적어도 7개의 신경기형발생 바이러스로 구성된 가축 내 arbovirus 는 그 중 3개가 연구가 잘 이루어져 있어 arbovirus 연구를 통해 ZIKV의 연구를 통찰할 수 있다. 본 논문은 태반을 통한 신경기형발생 바이러스 전달 모델링에 2가지 주요 해부학적 구조에 대해 설명하고 지카 질병의 마우스 모델 구축을 위해 앞서 발표 되었던 주요 연구결과를 되짚어 본다.
