심부전(heart failure)는 당뇨병의 주요 심혈관계 합병증이다. 심부전의 가장 큰 위험인자는 노화이며, 당뇨를 가진 사람은 심부전이 발생할 확률이 2.5배 증가한다. 당뇨를 가진 심부전환자의 25~40%는 당뇨가 없는 환자에 비해 예후가 나쁜 편이다. 당뇨와 심부전과의 직간접적 상호관계를 파악하면 관련 연구 뿐만아니라 치료전략에 큰 도움이 될 것으로 보인다.
