에멀젼(emulsion)이란 물과 기름처럼 서로 섞이지 않는 두 가지 액체 중 하나가 작은 액적의 형태로 다른 액체에 분산되어 있는 상태를 말한다. 최근에는 1 마이크론 이하의 크기를 지닌 나노 에멀젼(nanoemulsion)을 이용하여 수용성 또는 지용성의 약물들의 경피 흡수를 촉진시키려는 연구들이 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 하지만 나노 에멀젼이 쉽게 불안정해지고 응집되면서 피부 투과 효율이 떨어지는 안정성 문제들이 나노 에멀젼의 상용화를 가로막고 있다. 본 총설 논문에서는 안정된 나노 에멀젼을 개발하기 위하여 고려해야 할 필수 요소들을 설명하고, 피부 염증, 종양, 관절염, 당뇨 등 다양한 질병 치료를 위하여 개발되고 있는 나노 에멀젼들을 소개하고 있어 관련 연구자들에게 도움이 될 것으로 생각된다.
