The Royal Societys Incoming Fellowships Programme aims to foster science and technology links between the UK and various countries throughout the world, enabling young and outstanding postdoctoral scientists to conduct cutting-edge research with their UK counterparts.
Subjects covered
All sciences, ie the disciplines in which the Society will elect researchers to the Fellowship of the Royal Society (for further details see the sectional committee information on RS website).
Countries covered
The Asian countries which the fellowship programme includes are: China, India, Japan, South Korea and South East Asia (Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam).
Eligibility
Applicants must be of postdoctoral or equivalent status at the time the award is taken up. Scientists in the final year of their PhD can submit an application. If successful, the award will only be given subject to the confirmation of his/her PhD at the time when the award is taken up.
Applicants must be nationals of the country from which they are applying and should be resident and working in the country of nationality. Priority may be given to applicants with less experience of having worked abroad. Applicants currently in the UK are not eligible to apply.
UK hosts must be British or EU citizens resident in the UK. Non-UK/EU citizens must have held a permanent position at a UK institute for three years minimum to act as a host.
Candidates for the fellowship programme will need to have identified and contacted a UK host institution prior to submitting an application and substantial contact between host and applicant prior to the application is essential. This contact should lead to a clearly defined and mutually-beneficial research proposal.
English Level: All applicants must be competent in oral and written English. The UK host should verify they are happy with the level of English of the applicant in the application form where this is requested.
Length of visit
The Royal Society will provide funding for visits of between six months minimum and up to 12 months maximum.
Host institutions
UK hosts should be based at any UK research institution. Scientists working in governmental research institutes are not necessarily excluded from acting as hosts but they should explain, in a separate email, why their parent institute is not funding the visit.
Value of award
The Royal Society will provide funding to cover the visiting scientists cost of living in the UK. This includes food, accommodation and local travel. The award does not cover international travel to and from the UK.
Fellowship awards are between ?8,200 (for visitors based outside London) and ?0,000 (for visitors based within London). China Fellowship programmes sponsored by the KC Wong Education Foundation are between ?2,830 or ?3,550 (in London).

Joint partners
The Royal Society administers these programmes with funding of its own. For the China Fellowship programmes, various other sources are used, including the KC Wong Education Foundation of Hong Kong, the Sino-British Fellowship Trust and BP Plc and the United Kingdom Foreign and Commonwealth Office under the Chevening Fellowships Programme.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Successful candidates will require work permits to enter the UK. Work permits should be obtained by the UK host organisation.

Please note that your application will be submitted to your university department who will approve it and submit it to the Royal Society. For this reason, we suggest you submit your application to your approving department at least 5 days before the closing date.
It is the responsibility of the UK scientist to submit all applications. Applications received directly from overseas scientists will not be accepted.

This form is available to download below and must be completed by the host and holder of an international fellowship. The form should be returned to the Society within four weeks after the end of the visit.
