Introduce
The box girder is suitable for highway bridges because its high torsional stiffness can lead to a transversely uniform distribution of flange stresses for transversely nonuniform loading. However, analytical studies, including work by the writers (1), have shown that a box girder subjected to transversely nonuniform loading undergoes deformation of the cross section. This behavior gives rise to longitudinal stresses due to nonuniform warping and to transverse flexural stresses due directly to deformation of the cross section. These stresses tend to reduce the advantages anticipated from the high torsional stiffness of the box girder. Interior diaphragms are effective in limiting deformation of the cross section and its harmful effects.
