The objective of this report is to bring to light the current state of plant biotechnology, and to evaluate implications that may impact potential BW threats. The mechansim of xenogenic gene expression in plants is reviewed, along with examples of vaccines and antibodies which have been produced in plants. The economics and virtually unlimited quantities of material that can be produced, are the principle advantages of this eucaryotic expression system. The potential to use plants as a production system for biological toxins is a concern that warrants more detailed analysis.
