The Academy of Finland gives a general review of the state and quality of scientific research in the country once during the three year term of its research councils. Research funding has increased substantially since the previous review in 1997. This, the second review describes the development of the finnish science system in the latter half of the 1990s as well as the quality, output and impact of scientific research.
The report looks at scientific research in Finland and at the environment in which it operates from the vantage-point of the science system as a whole. Thus, instead of systematically exploring the situation in individual disciplines or fields of research, the report takes a broader view on the question of how the changes in the research environment have affected research.
International comparison receives much attention : issues of science policy, research funding and research output, for instance, are discussed in relation to other OECD countries.
