The FY 2002 President's budget request reflects the Administration's commitment to continue the five-year plan to double the NIH budget by FY 2003, with FY 2002 representing the fourth installment in this plan. Support for AIDS research will increse by $258 million, or 11.5 percent over the FY 2001 estimate, for a total of $2,501 As a result of these generous increase in our budget, the Institutes and Centers (ICs) at the NIH have many new research initiatives underway, all of which will be continued in FY 2002 and beyond. This ramped-up investment in medical research will pay real dividends in the years to come-dividends in the form of new scientific knowledge, new treatments, new diagnostic tools.
