Turning a new idea into commercial results is never easy. Making sure that the resulting innovations bring real benefits to everyday lives is an even greater challenge. In the UK a large number of policies, schemes and initiatives have been designed to help translate scientific research into wealth and social well-being. These efforts are based on a simple premise: that supporting innovation is not simply about encouraging world-class scientists, forward-thinking businesses and confident users of technology. It is also about developing the relationships that exist between them. Such an approach has helped the UK to create an environment that is especially supportive to innovation, offering:
- Excellent capabilities in research and technological development
- innovative approaches to education and training
- a wide range of schemes and incentives to encourage enterprise
- strong relationships between academics, industrialists and health care professionals
- initiatives and organisations which work to bring everyday users into the very process of innovation.
This booklet provides a snapshot of this system of innovation as it exists in the UK today, highlighting some of the initiatives, organisations and individuals which have helped to turn new ideas into products and services that will improve all our lives. Contact web sites are listed in section 8.
