The Department of Defense(DoD) has recently
accelerated efforts to develop Unmanned Combat Air
Vehicles(UCAVs). Controlled by operators on the
ground, designers envision these aircraft could
launch, attack, and recover without crew members
aboard. UCAVs have not received broad attention
but as
development efforts mature and funding
requirements
grow, they will likely come under increasing
scrutiny.
Issues of potential congressional interest include
acquisition strategy, affordability, procurement
quantity, arms control implications, manning
implications, and suitability as a surveillance
platform.
