Built on the continuing successes of international genome-sequencing projects, the Genomes to Life program will take the logical next step: a quest to understand the composition and function of the biochemical networks and and pathways that carry out the essential processes of living organisms. This roadmap sets forth an aggressive 10-year plan designed to exploit high-throughput genomic strategies and centered around four major goals:
- Identify and characterize the moecular machines of life - the multiprotein complexes that execute cellular functions and govern cell form.
- Characterize gene regulatory networks.
- Characterize gene regulatory networks.
- Characterize the functional repertoire of complex microbial communities in their natural environments at the molecular level.
- Develop the computational methods and capabilities to advance understanding of complex biological systems and predict their behavior.
