It gives an overview of resent developments before describing in more detail current work in universities and companies, with brief descriptions of activities and contact points for follow-up discussions. The booklet is designed to be used by companies and universities, both at home and outside the UK, who may be looking for development partners or suppliers. The British Government is keen to promote callaboration between UK companies and universities, and with inward investors: the Invest.UK organisation [see details on page 69]operates a comprehensive service for those looking to establish facilities in the UK. We believe that the UK is an attractive place to set up R&D and manufacturing facilities for fibre optics products and application. The experience gained from 35 years activity in this field means that there is a rich supply of professional and technical staff with expertise in the various disciplines. There is also a great deal of active networking between organizations and individuals which helps to stimulate new ideas and ventures. The UK has much to offer potential investor in other respects too. Britian gives fast and easy access to the European Union single market, with excellent transport and utilities infrastructure. We have a stable goverment that promotes a dynamic market economy, and is committed to maintaining a highly competive business environment that gives companies every incentive to grow. These are among the reasons why Britain has attracted nearly half of all Japanese and North American investment in Europe. We hope this booklet will be a useful source of reference for all people working in the fibre optics area, both in the UK and overseas, and that it will encourage broader interactions between those interested in the field.
