BIOMEMS is targeted to have the fastest growth rate within the MEMS market, particularly for drug discovery and delivery, diagnostics, biotelemetry, and genomics. However, manufacturing of BioMEMS devices differs from IC manufacture because the market requires a diversity if materials, physical structures, input/output methods, products, and initially lower volumes per product. Held in July 1999, this conference was one of the only MEMS conferences that focused specifically on the commercialization of BioMEMS and manufacturing strategies essential for the success of MEMS devices in the biomedical field. With the MEMs market expected to reach $12 billion in the year 2000, research is ongoing to come up with alternative methods of microfabrication. Future trends in the application of MEMs show that the focus on batch-fabricated devices and related processes is not be enough. Development of new materials and alternative processes will have a large impact on a huge range of BioMEMs applications: - Drug discovery - Diagnostics/screening - Drug dispensing - Targeted drug delivery - Genetic analysis and related areas - Uniting DNA arrays and microfluidic technologies - DNA Sequencing - Surgical Instruments - Diagnostic Tools - Artificial Organs
