The internet is expected to have a major impact
on global supply chains. The implications are
significant for strategies to develop firm and
national competitiveness.
This report is based on extensive consultations
during 2001 with e-commerce and supply chain
leaders in industry. It aims to provide an
assessment of changes already experienced by
firms operating in Australia and globally,
future directions planned by industry, and
impediments to change and concerns of industry
that government might address.
The Reserve Bank of Australia has estimated
about a third of Australia's recent impressive
productivity growth has been generated through
the use of Information and Communication
Technologies (ICT). We consider internet
technologies and their application in e-commerce
will be a major driver of ICT generated
productivity growth, especially through
improving the efficiencies of interactions
between firms ?the supply chain relationship.
This is supported by research and analysis
published in the Cisco/Allen report and the
National Office for the Information Economy's
(NOIE) E-commerce Beyond 2000 report .
It is a challenging time for firms engaging in e-
commerce. Expectations have so far exceeded the
capacity of technology to deliver. E-commerce is
more than a technology issue, it needs to be
integrated into business strategy. In firms,
Chief Information Officers (CIOs) need to work
with business planners and their Chief Executive
Officers (CEOs). In government, business and
information technology agencies need to work
together.
Australian firms have plans for developing
internet-driven supply chains in many sectors,
and the success of these will be critical to
Australian productivity growth and
competitiveness. Appendices to this report cover
developments in the following of industries:
automotive, building and construction, business
and professional services, chemicals and
plastics, heavy engineering, minerals, sport,
tourism and transport and logistics.
