The candidate sources fo energy can be judged with a variety fo criteria: availability and reliability of fuel supply, technological complexity, safety, overall cost, environmental impact(e.g. greenhouse effect). The relative priorities between these criteria depend on public opinion, the geo-political situation and technological advances.
