◇ The growing energy needs of the increasing world population, combined with limited fossil fuel resources and increased environmental concerns lead to the consideration of various alternative energy sources to satisfy the demand. The candidate sources fo energy can be judged with a variety fo criteria: availability and reliability of fuel supply, technological complexity, safety, overall cost, environmental impact(e.g. greenhouse effect). The relative priorities between these criteria depend on public opinion, the geo-political situation and technological advances. Research in fusion is an ongoing endeavour, as it potentially can be a provider of base electric power in the long term, within a portfolio of various energy sources.
