The National Institute of Standards and Technology's(NIST), Building and Fire Research Laboratory(BFRL) is one of NIST's seven Laboratories. The mission of BFRL is to enchance the competitiveness of U.S. industry and public safety by developing performance prediction methods, measurement technologies, and technical advances needed to assure improvement of the life cycle quality and economy of constrcted facilities include all buildings and their furnishings and the public and private utilities and public works that support business, commerce industry, and homes. BFRL's effors are closely coordinated with complementary activities of industry, professional and trade organizations, academe, and trade organizations, academe, and other agenices of government. The Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging(BLSA), as it passes its 35th birthday, is growing and changing. What began as a study with a few men in the late 1950s now has more than 1,100 active paricipants, both men and women, and continues to expand. Since the BLSA's inception, scientists using its data have published more than 600 reports and articles in the biomedical literature. Their findings have helped change aging research, clinical practice, and the way we view aging. The Electronics and Electrical Engineering Laboratory (EEEL), working in concert with other NIST Laboratories, is providing measurement and other generic technology critical to the competitiveness of the U.S. electronics industry and the U.S. electricity-equipment industry. This report summarizes selected techinical accomplishments and describes activities conducted by the Laboratory in FY 1997. Also included are profiles of EEEL's organization, customer interactions, and long-term goals.

The mission of the National Institute on Aging is “the conduct and support of biomedical, social, and behavioral research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to the aging process and the diseases and other special problems and needs of the aged.“ In Perspective page I : New knowledge, new tools, and a new perspective characterize the study of aging today.
