Official Proceedings of the Seventh International Power Quality Conference (1993), p875, pp236-49, 3 Abstract : The brains of a power system may be the controller chip but at its heart is the power switch. Catastrophic failures in power systems are generally attributable to the power devices, not the controller. Consequently, proper selection of the power components and the optimization of their working environment will have a profound influence on the system's overall dependability and efficiency. This paper discusses power section design and optimum matching of the controller to this power section. This paper presents the design of a single phase 3000 Watt (230V/sub AC/) power factor correction (PFC) circuit using a single large area high-current power MOSFET chip in conjunction with an advanced technology fast recovery epitaxial diode (FRED). These large area MOSFET die are available to replace the parallel MOSFET devices normally used in very high current PFC circuits. The use of a monolithic chip in an industry standard package simplifies layouts, makes for more compact designs, improves reliability and leaves the door ajar for eventual second sourcing.
