Preparation and properties of high-pretilt-angle polyimides based on an alicyclic dianhydride and long alkyloxy side-group-containing diamines Li, Ling (Shanghai Jiao Tong Univ) Yin, Jie | Sui, Yu | Xu, Hong-Jie | Fang, Jian-Hua | Zhu, Zi-Kang | Wang, Zong-Guang Source: Journal of Polymer Science, Part A: Polymer Chemistry 38 11 2000 John Wiley & Sons Inc p 1943-1950 0887-624X Abstract: A series of polyimides were prepared by a solution polycondensation reaction between 3-carboxylmethylcyclopentane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic dianhydride and 4-alkyloxybenzene-1,3-diamines in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and chemical imidization with triethylamine and acetic anhydride. These polyimides possess great organo-solubility, high optical transparency, and high pretilt angles. They are soluble not only in strong polar aprotic organic solvents such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N,N-dimethylacetamide, N,N-dimethylformamide, m-cresol, and 1,4-butyrolactone but also in common low-boiling-point solvents such as chloroform and tetrahydrofuran, and some are even soluble in acetone. They exhibit high transparency at wavelengths greater then 320 nm. They can generate pretilt angles greater than 5°, and some can even achieve pretilt angles greater than 10°. The pretilt angle of a polyimide increases with the increasing length of the alkyloxy side group. The polyimides possess glass-transition temperatures between 180 and 230 °C and thermal decomposition temperatures (onset temperatures) of about 435 °C. In English 43 Refs. Effect of bridging group in poly(titanyloxo-phthalocyanine)s on photocurrent generation Han, Duk Sang (Korea Research Inst of Chemical Technology) Li, Ying-Jun | Kim, Jeong Soo | Kim, Eunkyoung Source: Synthetic Metals 101 1 Jul 12-Jul 18 1998 1999 Sponsored by: Ministere de l'Education Nationale; Universite de Montpellier II; Conseil Regional du Languedoc-Roussillon; District de Montpellier; et al. Elsevier Sequoia SA p 62-63 0379-6779 Abstract: Photoelectric properties of soluble poly(titanyloxo-phthalocyanine)s, PTiOPc, m which phthalocynaine rings were bridged by carbonyl, sulfur dioxide, or alkylene groups, were investigated by using a photoelectrochemical techniques. Soluble poly(titanyloxo-phthalocyanine)s were synthesized by the condensation of phthalic anhydride, dianhydrides, Ti(OBu)4, and urea in tetramethylene sulfone, followed by hydrolysis in an aqueous solution of KOH containing NaCl. Thin films of PTiOPc showed photocurrent of 2 to approximately 10 μA/cm2 upon excitation with a light above 560 nm under external potential of 0.6 V (vs Ag/AgCl). The intensity of the photocurrent was highly dependent on the polymer structure. Thin film of PTiOPc with carbonyl bridging groups showed highest photocurrent generation, whereas that with hexafluoroisopropylidene groups showed lower photocurrent. XRD of PTiOPc indicated that ordering of the polymer, induced by the bridging group, relates to the photocurrent. In English 3 Refs. Ei tagged | Document availability and cost 3. Polyether-polyimide thermoplastic elastomers. I. Synthesis and properties Yu, Xuehai (Nanjing Univ) Song, Chunkang | Li, Chi | Cooper, Stuart L. Source: Journal of Applied Polymer Science v 44 n 3 Jan 25 1992 p 409-417 0021-8995 Abstract: A series of polyether-polyimides based on polycondensation of poly(tetramethylene oxide) glycol di-p-aminobenzoate with different molecular weights (650, 1000, 2000) and benzenetetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (BTDA) or 3,3 prime ,4,4 prime -benzenetetracarboxylic acid anhydride (BPTDA) was synthesized. Infrared spectroscopy (IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and stress-strain tests were used to follow the imidization process and to study the structure-property relations of this family of polymers. FTIR data showed that the imidization was completed after 6 h at 140°C, which is a much lower temperature than that required for polyimides synthesized from low molecular weight diamines. DSC and DMA results indicated that the block copolymer exhibited a well-phase-separated structure and had a broad rubbery plateau from about -70°C to 260°C, which varied with dianhydride type and hard-segment content. The BTDA series had enhanced mechanical properties compared to the BPTDA series. The excellent tensile properties of the polyether-polyimides suggest that they could be potentially used as heat-resistant thermoplastic elastomers. Fluorescence and initiation behavior of N-(4-N prime ,N prime -dimethylaminophenyl) maleimide and its polymer Cai, Hui (Peking Univ) He, Xiao-Hui | Zheng, Dong-Ying | Qiu, Jian | Li, Zi-Chen | Li, Fu-Mian Source: Journal of Polymer Science, Part A: Polymer Chemistry 34 7 May 1996 John Wiley & Sons Inc p 1245-1250 0887-624X Abstract: A maleimide bearing electron-donating chromophore, DMAPMI, is synthesized from N,N-dimethylaminoaniline and maleic anhydride in the presence of acetic anhydride and sodium acetate. The fluorescence spectra of DMAPMI and its polymer or copolymer are recorded and compared at the same chromophore concentrations. It is observed that the fluorescence emission intensity of DMAPMI is much lower that those of its polymers. Study of the initiation behavior of DMAPMI and its polymer shows that they could initiate the photopolymerization of AN, by combination with BPO, they could also initiate the thermopolymerization of vinyl monomers such as MMA. Bis(2,3-dicarboxyphenyl)sulfone and bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)sulfone were obtained by the oxidation of the corresponding bis(dicarboxyphenyl)sulfide by hydrogen peroxide. The polyimides from the dianhydrides mentioned above and 4,4 prime -oxydianiline were prepared. The properties, such as dynamic mechanical behavior, thermooxidative stability, stress-strain behavior, chemical resistance, and permeability to some gases have been in investigated for the isomeric polyimides. Source: Macromolecules v 31 n 8 Apr 21 1998 ACS p 2702-2704 0024-9297 Abstract: The synthesis and characterization of electroactive, high molecular weight, film-forming polyimides derived from the amino-terminated aniline trimer were studied. Three copolyimides were prepared using 4,4 prime -(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride, diamine and 4,4 prime -(oxydianiline) in different feed ratios. It was found that the stoichiometry of all monomers could be readily achieved by slow addition of diamine to the reaction medium upon observation of a significant increase in solution viscosity. All polymers were characterized by spectroscopic means. In English 9 Refs.
