A new red phosphor SrTiO3:Pr,Al for field emission displays(FED) was successfully developed by addition of Al together with Pr to SrTiO3 as a luminescent center. On the role of Al, it was considered that Al(3+) substituting Ti(4+) compensates an extra positive charge of Pr(3+) at the Sr(2+) site. However a question was also raised on the fact that the optimum quantity of added Al ions amounts to 30 times as hith as the Pr concentration, which is 1.0mol% to Sr. This work attempts to make clear the mechanism of the Al addition effect. It was found that when the concentration of Al was varied in the range of 0 to 30 mol%, Al mixed in SrTiO3 structure, it was expand into SrTiO3 for addition of Al. It was also found that addition of Al bring about new formation of tetrahedral Al-O bond. The mechanism of the increased red luminescence by Al addition are discussed.
