박팔현 주간경제 759호 2003.12.24 차세대 TV로 인터랙티브 TV와 IPTV에 관심이 모아지고 있다. 방송과 통신의 디지털화 진전에 따른 인터넷과 TV의 융합으로 인해 기존의 TV 기능도 다양화되고 있다. 아날로그 방송이 디지털로 전환되면서 TV에 대화형 기능이 부가되고 있다. 또한 PC에서만 볼 수 있었던 인터넷 서비스를 TV를 통해 간편하게 볼 수 있는 기능도 등장하고 있다. 바보상자라는 오명을 쓰고 있던 TV가 새로운 모습으로 변신하고 있는 것이다. 인터랙티브 TV란? 현단계에서 새로이 등장하고 있는 TV 기능은 인터랙티브(Interactive) TV와 IP(Internet Protocol) TV이다. 인터랙티브 TV란 기존의 아날로그 방송이 디지털로 전환됨에 따라 방송 전파상에 데이터를 전송함으로써 TV에 대화형 서비스 기능을 구현한 서비스 및 장비를 말한다. 국내에서는 데이터 방송, 상호작용형 방송, 쌍방향 방송 등 다양한 용어로 사용되고 있다. 인터랙티브 TV는 상향 채널의 사용 여부에 따라 두 가지 유형으로 구분된다. 첫째는 상향채널을 사용하지 않는 비대칭형 서비스이다. 네트워크와 상호작용이 없고 다만 수신기의 메모리에 의하여 수신기와 상호작용을 하게 되는 서비스이다. 둘째는 상향채널을 사용하는 대칭형 서비스이다. 시청자가 방송 프로그램을 직접 시청하면서 방송 내용과 관련된 정보를 네트워크 상에서 찾거나 퀴즈와 같은 프로그램에 직접 참가하는 서비스이다. 인터랙티브 TV의 경우 방송 시청 이외에 홈뱅킹, 전자우편 등의 서비스도 가능하며, 영화를 볼 때마다 대금을 지불하는 PPV(Pay-per-view), 동일한 영화를 일정한 시간간격으로 계속 방영하여 시청자가 편리한 시간대에 영화를 볼 수 있는 NVOD(Near Video on Demand), 인터넷 등 고도의 서비스를 제공할 수 있다. IPTV란? IPTV(Internet Protocol TV)란 TV를 통해 인터넷서비스를 이용할 수 있도록 개발된 서비스 및 장비를 말한다. 기존의 TV에다 전용 모뎀(또는 셋탑박스)이라는 기기만 덧붙이면 되며, TV나 라디오 켜듯이 그냥 전원만 넣으면 인터넷을 이용할 수 있는 상태가 된다. 따라서 어려운 PC에 익숙하지 않은 사람이라도 간단히 리모콘이나 무선 키보드를 이용해 인터넷 검색은 물론 영화감상, 홈쇼핑, 홈뱅킹, 홈트레이딩, 화상서비스, 온라인 게임, 노래방, MP3 등 TV 인터넷이 제공하는 다양한 컨텐츠 및 부가서비스를 제공 받을 수 있다. 현단계에서는 디지털 방송이 본격적으로 확산되고 있지 않기 때문에 디지털 방송을 기반으로 한 인터랙티브 TV보다는 기존의 아날로그 TV 수상기에다 모뎀을 연결하여 인터넷 서비스를 제공하는 IPTV가 먼저 서비스를 개시하고 있다. 인터랙티브 TV와 IPTV의 차이점 인터랙티브 TV는 아날로그 방송이 디지털 방송으로 전환됨에 따라 방송 프로그램을 기반으로 하여 각종 부가 정보를 대화형으로 제공하는 서비스 유형이지만, IPTV는 디스플레이로 TV를 활용할 뿐 인터넷 접속을 통해 쌍방향 컨텐츠를 제공하는 서비스 유형이라는 점에서 커다란 차이점이 있다. 따라서 인터랙티브 TV에서는 셋탑박스를 사용하며, IPTV에서는 반드시 인터넷 모뎀을 사용해야 한다. 그러나 최근에는 이러한 인터넷 모뎀과 셋탑박스의 기능이 결합되는 추세이므로 외부 연결 매체만으로는 인터랙티브 TV와 IPTV를 쉽게 구분하기 어려워 지고 있다. 특히 향후 디지털화 및 융합화가 진전됨에 따라 인터랙티브 TV와 IPTV의 구분이 사라지게 되고, 더 포괄적인 의미의 지능형 TV로 발전하게 될 것으로 전망된다. =================================================================== What is IPTV? IPTV is a method for broadcasting a “multicast” video stream over the campus network. The “multicasting” technology allows a single video stream to be viewed by many users on the network, which exponentially reduces the amount of bandwidth required. So instead of a server sending out 25 individual video streams requiring 300 Kbps each, it can send a single 300 Kbps stream that can be viewed by 25 viewers. This reduction in bandwidth requirements allows a much higher quality video stream to be used. IPTV currently broadcasts Mpeg1 encoded video, which is the same format used in video CD’s (VCD’s). More instructors will be developing video components for their courses as digital camcorders and video editing software become cheaper and easier to use, and IPTV provides an efficient solution for delivering high quality video. TOP What can be broadcast on IPTV? Lectures and presentations by faculty or guest speakers can easily be taped and edited for IPTV. Ask your ITC or the University Media Center about assistance if your department doesn’t have equipment for this. Videos that were commercially produced may be broadcast on IPTV as long as you own the rights to do so, or can get permission from the copyright owners. Live feeds from satellite TV can be broadcast as long as an agreement has been reached with that channel. An arrangement was made with CNN that allowed coverage of the 9/11 tragedy to be broadcast, and IPTV will soon be broadcasting the Research Channel. Special events can be broadcast live over IPTV. President Bush’s visit last year brought IPTV to ECU. If a speaker or event is of interest campus wide, then it may be a candidate for live broadcast. Narrated slide presentations can be broadcast. If it’s video and you own the rights or can get permission, it can be on IPTV. TOP Advantages of IPTV Large courses with many sections and instructors can share video materials easily. So if your department owns an instructional video that needs to be seen by ten sections of a course, you could have that video put on IPTV (as long as you had rights to do so with the publishing company) and then all ten sections could view the video at one time, or each instructor could schedule a broadcast for their section. This saves wear on the tape, and removes any scheduling conflicts. Appearances by valuable guest lecturers can be recorded and used for multiple courses semester after semester. You might be able to get the Surgeon General to guest lecture at one of your Health 1000 classes, but chances are he won’t do all 30 sections this semester, and probably won’t come back at all next semester. So video his lecture and share it for years to come through the magic of IPTV. Orientations that are given to a large number of people on a regular basis can be taped for viewing on IPTV. Videos broadcast through IPTV are automatically archived in Real Media format and stored on a Real Server. This gives you the option of allowing students who could not view the broadcast to watch the same video, either on or off campus (note that Real Media is not a multicast system, and has a limited bandwidth capacity). TOP Examples of current IPTV uses Guest lecturers have been filmed and the edited videos are available for viewing by all 35 sections of Health 1000 A mandatory workshop for many students and workers at ECU on blood borne pathogens was filmed and the edited video is being viewed by groups who then take a paper based quiz to complete the university requirements Human Resources is using the system to broadcast the SPA/EPA orientation, which alleviates the need for nine speakers to speak once a month Undergraduate studies and the School of Education are developing video on topics such as “study skills” and “time management” that will be shared with all Freshmen students An advisory video was developed and shared with students in the Fall The Center for Disease Control’s anthrax update was broadcast “Access Art”, a show by Mike Dorsey was made available “Diversity Moments with Nell” by Nell Lewis was broadcast An instructional module on Prenatal Care was made available by Nursing TOP Potential uses of IPTV We are able to broadcast IPTV over the Internet2 to other institutions. This opens up a wide variety of potential uses. Guest lecturers, special presentations, or entire courses at any institutions connected to Internet2 could be shared via IPTV. TOP How to become involved IPTV is currently still a pilot project at ECU. It is scheduled to reach the production phase by Fall 2002.
