HJB, also known as micronuclei in the toxicological sciences, are small ( 1 μm) erythrocyte DNA inclusions that are the consequence of cytogenetic damage, more specifically double-strand breaks or lagging whole chromosomes. Normally, HJB-containing erythrocytes are formed at a low frequency, and are removed quickly and efficiently from peripheral blood circulation by a healthy spleen; hence, their presence on the peripheral blood smear is indirect evidence of splenic dysfunction.
