- US Department of Energy (DOE) operates 9 multi-purpose national laboratories and 1 program-oriented national laboratory, which is the largest research system in the world. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is the renewable energy program-focused laboratory among the above 10 laboratories. NREL is located in Golden, Colorado, nearby Denver. NREL started as Solar Energy Institute in 1973 by Carter Administration, and was upgraded to the National Laboratory by Bush Administration in 1991. The total annual budget was approximately 200 million dollars in recent years.
