1970년대 중반부터 MIS 실리콘 태양전지 개발을 시작한후, 결정질 실리콘 태양전지의 연구개발을 주도하여 세계최고 효율을 보고하였다. Polycrystalline 실리콘 박막태양전지는 Pacific solar(현재는 CSG Solar)에 의해 산업생산을 시작하였다.
2002년부터 독립된 School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering으로 독립하였으며, High efficiency-Commercial silicon solar cell을 연구하는 1st Generation strand, Poly-Si 박막을 연구하는 2nd Generation strand, 차세대 태양전지를 연구하는 3rd Generation strand 및 태양전지 특성평가를 하는 Si imaging strand로 약 100여명의 교수-학생들이 연구를 하는 그룹이다.
