In 1994 the Applied Biotechnology Laboratory was established at the Department of Chemical Engineering (now renamed as Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering), KAIST(Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology). Our laboratory has been expanded to a great extent, and has been renamed as Metabolic and Biomolecular Engineering Laboratory (MBEL) as of December 1999.

Our research field includes metabolic engineering, genomics/proteomics/metabolomics/bioinformatics, production of primary and secondary metabolites, production and engineering of proteins and other biopolymers, and DNA chip technology for diagnostics. A number of projects supported by government and companies have been completed, and many others are currently in progress. Our laboratory has made significant advances in the development of upstream-to-downstream processes for the production of various primary metabolites, recombinant proteins and biopolymers.

Research in our lab will be focused on metabolic and biomolecular engineering studies as reflected by the name of our lab. Our lab has recently been appointed as a National Research Laboratory on Metabolic Engineering by the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

Professor Sang Yup Lee has received numerous awards and honors including the First Young Scientist's Award from the President of Korea, the Scientist of the Month Award from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Best Patent Award (SejongDaewang Award) from KIPO, the Citation Classic Award from ISI, USA, and the First Elmer Gaden Award (1999 Best Paper Award) from Biotechnology and Bioengineering (John Wiley & Sons, USA) at the ACS National meeting. In 2001, Prof. Lee has received the National Order of Merit from the President of Korea, for his contribution to the advancement of science and technology. We welcome young scientists and engineers with great ambition to join our lab.

Bright future is here with us, MBEL!
