SMALL

SMALL is Sensors & MicroActuators Learning Lab at the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York (SUNY-Buffalo). The lab director is Professor Kwang W. Oh in the Department of Electrical Engineering. Our research interests in SMALLab are nanobiosensors and microactuators in the areas of so-called LOC (lab-on-a-chip) MicroTAS (Micro Total Analysis Systems) BioMEMS (Bio Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) SANS (Sample-to-Answer Nano/microfluidic Systems) Microvalves, micropumps, microfluidics, etc. Nowadays, small technology, hybrid nano & microtechnology, has been widely used as the tool to answer various science and engineering questions from biotech to defense, telecom to transportation. We use the term "Small" to refer to nano-micro world. In our SMALLab, you will learn "Small Tech", such as BioMEMS, microfluidics, and nanobiotechnology to build various nanobiosensors and microactuators. And you will learn how to build highly integrated, miniaturized, and automated biological or mechanical machines, so small their operation can't be seen by the naked eye. These machines sense or process physical, chemical, or biological information and react(uate) to it. Small Tech will become one of the driving forces behind research and industry this century.
