Hand Rehabilitation Lab

The Hand Rehabilitation Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) is dedicated to the study of rehabilitation, biomechanics, and neurophysiological characterization of the hand. We work collaboratively with investigators in diverse backgrounds including engineers, kinesiologists, neuroscientists, therapists, and physicians. The lab’s WILDLY IMPORTANT RESEARCH GOALS are: · Understand neurophysiologic and biomechanical mechanisms for deficits in hand function following aging or neurologic disorders such as stroke. · Employ ergonomic design and develop rehabilitative interventions and assistive devices to improve the quality of life for persons with sensorimotor impairment. With our research, we aim to: · Improve the ability of persons with stroke or other sensorimotor deficits to voluntarily grip and release daily objects · Guide therapists and physicians in treating specific hand impairments following neurologic or orthopaedic injury Our long-term goal is to help persons with stroke, aging, and other sensorimotor impairments increase functional independence and their capabilities to integrate into society.
