Small size and low dimensionality play a critical role in determining the properties of materials that are often unforeseen in their bulk counterparts, and the unique properties of materials at the nanoscale have attracted much interest in both science and engineering communities, namely nanotechnology or nanoscience. Among many others in nanoscience, we believe solid-states electronics/optoelectronics at the nanoscale is particularly interesting, not only because it can go beyond the fundamental limit of the conventional microelectronics, but also because it can provide unique opportunities to explore unprecedented solid-state device physics.
Our current research concerns primarily lie in electronics/photonics/optoelectronics based on low-dimensional semiconductors at the nanometer scale. Specifically we first grow high quality one-dimensional semiconductor crystals by gas-phase syntheses as play-beds. Based on various forms of nanowire devices, we then explore fundamental device physics electron dynamics operating at the nanometer scale. At the end we will generate exciting interdisciplinary exercises from fundamental understanding of material sciences to the development of novel functional devices with technological implication.
