Smart sensors and sensing technology

Smart sensors are increasingly involved in every aspect of human life. They are employed to monitor the health of structure, control processes in manufacture plant, traffic control, and provide information that can be used for improving the operational efficiency of structure… In SSS lab, we develop state-of-the-art smart sensors and sensing technology optimized for damage detection technique with the aim to apply these techniques to a wide range of real-world applications.

Structural health monitoring

Our research involves developing the intelligent system with advanced sensors and sensing technologies for monitoring the health of structure. After extreme events, such as earthquakes, SHM system provides rapidly the condition screening and reliable information regarding the integrity of the structure. It has immediate life-saving benefits and market potentials.

Statistical pattern recognition

The structural health monitoring problem can be casted in the context of statistical pattern recognition (SPR) paradigm: (1) operational evaluation; (2) data acquisition and cleansing; (3) feature extraction and data reduction; and (4) statistical model development. In SSS Lab, we develop data analysis algorithms employing the SPR techniques such as outlier analysis, neural network, and support vector machine… for supporting the identification of damages of structures. Also the data normalization technique is applied to eliminate the changes caused by operational and environmental effects which affects to the measurement system.

Nondestructive testing

The concept of nondestructive testing (NDT) is to obtain the condition or properties of the specimen or structure without causing damage to them. A variety of NDT technique such as laser ultrasonic, acoustic emission, thermal imaging… with an advanced signal and image processing to give an intuitive and automated damage diagnostic are being developed in our lab.

Applications

We devoted to bring the technology closer to industrial applications. In collaboration with many institutions and companies, we are now working on a variety range of structures: infrastructure such as bridges, nuclear power plant; transportation vehicles such as aircraft, high speed train; and power- generated structure such as wind turbine.
