What is lightwave system? By definition, lightwave is the electromagnetic wave in the infrared, visible, and ultraviolet ranges, which falls between x-rays and microwaves. Lightwave systems, often referred as “fiber-optic communication systems”, represent the communication systems using optical signal and fiber-optic cable. Fiber-optic communications impacted on our way of living more than any other technologies. In fact, the Rumelson-MIT program published in 2005 ranked the fiber-optic communication in the 4 th place among the 25 technologies that changed the world during last 25 years. Dr. William A. Wulf, a former president of the National Academy of Engineering in US, also recognized fiber-optic communication as one of the 20 greatest achievements of engineering made in the twentieth century together with electrification, automobile, airplane, water supply and distribution system, electronics, radio and television, computer, and telephone, etc . This is perhaps why George Gilder, the world-famous author of “ Telecosm ” , proclaimed that “ Our future depends on silicon and glass! ”What do we do in our laboratory? Since our laboratory was established by Prof. Y. C. Chung in 1994, we have been focusing our research activities on various aspects of lightwave systems and related technologies. One of the main focuses of our laboratory is to identify the fundamental limitations imposed on the lightwave systems and discover new practical solutions to overcome such limitations. Our research activities include both experimental and theoretical works. We have a well-equipped laboratory to support these activities with state-of-the-art test gears and various types of advanced components. The followings are our core competence, mission, and applications. Core Competence: Lightwave systems technology. Mission: To create a world-leading knowledge base in lightwave communication systems, subsystems, networks, and related technologies. Applications: High-capacity all-optical core networks Long-distance transmission systems. Metropolitan area networks. Broadband access networks. Fiber backhaul networks for wireless application Major achievements of our laboratory. Long-Distance Transmission Systems. 5.12 Tb/s (128 x 40 Gb/s) WDM system. 40 Gb/s based WDM system. New fiber design for high-capacity WDM systems. All-Optical Core and Metropolitan Area Networks. KAIST all-optical network (KAON) testbed. Optical cross-connects and optical add/drop multiplexers. Bi-directional WDM SHR network. Broadband Access Networks. Passive optical network for microcellular CDMA PCS. Multi-purpose fiber-optic access network (MFAN). WDM PON and spectrum-sliced light source. High-speed LAN at 10 Gb/s and beyond. Subsystems. Optical performance monitoring techniques. Advanced modulation formats. Advanced fiber designs (both SMF and MMF). PMD, Raman amplifier, etc.
