Systems and Nanomaterials Engineering

Welcome to J.W. Hong's Systems and Nanomaterials Engineering Laboratories (SNEL) at Auburn University. Our current research interests are very Interdisciplinary in the fields of nano/microfluidic systems design and fabrication, nanomaterials syntheses and characterization, and clean and sustainable energy production. More specifically, we are focusing on the development of integrated microfluidic systems for automated systems biotechnology targeting nanoliter, picoliter, or femtoliter levels of samples and reagents. We have successfully demonstrated parallel and distributed microfluidic systems for reaction kinetics and landscaping study. Regarding nanomaterials research, we have developed unique microreactors through our digitally programmable microdroplet generation system for low temperature nanoparticle synthesis. This can be applied to semiconductor and polymer nanomaterials synthesis. We also are interested in green electrical energy production directly from non-eatable biological resources through biochemical catalytic reactions or microbial metabolic degradations.
