Our group focuses on the development of new and facile synthetic routes for the formation of functional nanostructures and their applications. Due to the quantum size effects (QSEs), nanoscaled materials behave quite differently from when they are in bulk scale. Furthermore, nanoscaled materials with specific chemical composition as well as structural conformation allow us to get better understanding about atomic scale phenomena of various elements. Nanoscaled materials, especially electrically and optically active ones may replace current silicon based electronic technologies. The examples are carbon nanotubes based nanoscale transistors, organic thin film transistors, optically active nanosystems for quantum photonics, etc. These applications require specific nanostructured materials which exhibit unique target-oriented properties. This indicates, in other words, that a “salad bar” of functional nanomaterials is needed. As various and numerous detail parts are required in order to construct even a simple house, we first need to stock various quantum structured materials which have divergent properties. Only when we have a full list of functional nanomaterials, the realization of more complex nanosystems will be possible.
