The small air-gap that is occurred by elasto-plastic deformation, fatigue and creep in material leads to microscop ical-crack and ultimate fracture. Also, it causes material damages such as deterioration of strength, rigidity or tou ghness. The Damage Mechanics is the study that translates the effect of small air-gap into the "mechanical variable" and that examines the small air-gap development and mechanical behavior of material.
The laboratory belongs to the Department of Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering of the Pusan National University. The main focus of the studies
done in the laboratory is to develop techniques for assessing the material
and structural safety by utilizing the CDM. In addition, the studies that are conducted in the laboratory include, but not limited to, the "damage
tolerance design", the "life-design", and the "integrity evaluation method"
of ships and off shore structures, with the theoretical bases such as the
elas to-plastic and the dislocation theories, fracture, fatigue, creep,
fracture thoughness, residual stress, the non-linear structural mechanics,
the fracture mechanics, the continuum damage mechanics, and the finite
element method.
