What is acoustics?

Acoustics is the science and engineering of sound, including its production, transmission, and effects. Here, the term sound is used in its broadest sense to encompass not only the airborne sound responsible for the sensation of human hearing but also many different kinds of mechanical waves such as surface waves, underwater sound, infra/ultrasound, and elastic waves in solids. As can be seen in the chart below, the scope and ramifications of acoustics are truly far reaching.

Acoustics Program at Yonsei University

The Acoustics Program at Yonsei University offers excellent opportunities to study the fundamentals of acoustics and carry out basic and applied research in related disciplines. Program of study leads to a master's or doctoral degree in mechanical engineering. Graduate-level courses in acoustics are offered every semester, including Acoustics I/II, Nonlinear Acoustics, and Psychoacoustics for Engineers.

Our research focuses on, but is not limited to, physical acoustics and its applications in such fields as

               Noise/Vibration/Harshness (NVH)
               Biomedical Ultrasonics
               Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE)
               Defense

The laboratory is well-equipped for measurements of airborne and underwater sounds. We invite you to browse through our web page and find out more about acoustics and the program. Welcome to the world of acoustics!
