Our main interest is structure, function, and cellular roles of proteolytic enzymes or related factors that are of biological and medical importance. We combine approaches in enzymology, biochemistry, biophysics, chemical biology, genetics, and structural biology to address diverse questions: what regulatory elements are implanted in molecular architecture? How does their dysregulation affect cellular physiology, and what factors or molecules can modulate the activity? The information obtained in these studies may not only lead to the fundamental understanding of their operational principles and physiological roles, but also help develop new strategies to exploit proteolytic enzymes that are associated with bacterial pathogenesis and human diseases.
