Fuel Cells
Fuel cell is an energy conversion device to convert chemical energy of fuels to electricity directly by electrochemical reactions.
Going directly from chemical to electrical energy avoids the entropy penalty of converting heat into mechanical work. The highly efficient fuel cell could change the world by providing low-cost, (nearly) pollution-free power.
Fuel cell electric vehicles are on the brink of market penetration. The most crucial huddle is the high fabrication cost of the fuel cell stack, mainly arising from Pt-based catalysts. We are focusing on development of ultralow-Pt and non-precious catalyst for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells by controlling nanostructure of the catalysts based on understanding of the oxygen reduction reaction and hydrogen oxidation reaction.
