Welcome to the Future Energy Lab for Hydrate Research (PI: Prof. Minjun Cha). Future Energy Lab (FUEL) was established at the Department of Energy and Resources Engineering, Kangwon National University, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do, South Korea in 2014.

Our research in FUEL focus on the understanding of host-guest inclusion compounds, especially gas hydrates, and their applications for future energy. Gas hydrates (clathrate hydrates) are well known host-guest compounds that are formed at low temperature and high pressure conditions, and are considered as future energy options for sustainable developments in energy and environmental fields due to their potential applications. However, gas hydrates have also been recognized as trouble makers in the oil and gas pipelines through hydrate formation.

Therefore, our research work covers a wide range of areas, including hydrates in nature (natural gas hydrates in the natural environments), hydrates in science (fundamentally interesting questions, such as hydrate structures, hydrate formation, hydrate dissociation, hydrate morphology, carbon dioxide capture and sequestration, green-house gas control strategies, hydrate-based desalination...), and hydrates in flow assurance (understanding the hydrate phase equilibrium in the presence of inhibitors, investigating the hydrate formation in the presence of hydrate inhibitors, and developing strategies for minimizing hydrate blockage problems using hydrate inhibitors).

강원대학교 에너지자원공학과 미래에너지연구실(FUEL)은 2014년에 설립되었으며, 가스 하이드레이트(Gas Hydrates) 기반 에너지 및 환경분야 응용에 관한 여러가지 연구를 수행하고 있습니다. 가스 하이드레이트는 안정적이고 지속적인 개발을 위한 미래에너지 옵션으로 손꼽히고 있으며, 이에 따라 화석에너지의 청정한 사용을 위한 효율적인 에너지 생산, 하이드레이트 기반 해수담수화, 이산화탄소 포집 및 저장, 하이드레이트 기반 온실가스 격리 전략 등에 관한 연구를 수행하고 있습니다. 또한 가스 하이드레이트는 석유 및 천연가스 생산과정에서 트러블메이커로도 손꼽히고도 있어, 이를 해결하는 연구 또한 수행 중입니다.
