Research interest

The major research interest is to understand molecular mechanisms controlling development of the central nervous system (CNS) which is greatly influenced by intricate interplay between neurons and glia.  This goal is pursued by studying the cell fate determination and differentiation of neurons and glia in the Drosophila CNS and by elucidating protective roles of glia in the CNS of the Drosophila model of human neurodegenerative diseases.  Specifically, our lab focuses on the following topics:
1. Mechanisms regulating identity determination and differentiation of neuron and glia
2. Functional roles of the genes involved in the development of the CNS and immune system
3. Mechanisms responsible for defects in CNS development and migration and activation of immune cells (hemocytes) in the Drosophila model of human neurodegenerative diseases
This study will provide novel insight into the basic principles of neural diversity and assembly of intricate cellular network with an outstanding degree of specificity in the CNS.  Furthermore, it will help understand molecular mechanisms of vertebrate neurogenesis and the basis of genetic diseases caused by human CNS defect and of neurodegenerative diseases and devise a new treatment.
