μ-Manufacturing and Multiscale Simulation Lab

We are interested in development of manufacturing processes and related models and numerical simulation tools of material behavior, especially powder and polymer processing including medical/surgical/dental components, piezoelectric components, hard/soft magnets, thermal management components such as heat exchanger and heat pipe, military/aerospace components, and optical component based on micro/nanoscale powder materials.

We develop these models and simulation tools with different scales including atomistic scale(molecular dynamics simulation), mesoscale(discrete element simulation), and macroscale(finite element simulation). We are also interested in developing interface algorithm among different scales, integrated multiscale simulation tool, sensitivity analyses, and finally multi-objective optimizations.

Another research area in manufacturing processes is the bio-inspired design (BID). Biomimetics is currently being considered as another source of design inspiration for growing complexity of engineering designs and manufacturing problems. Nature has many porous structures, which is the secret of their outstanding material properties. Powder processing is one of strong candidates for manufacturing these porous structures.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is also our research area. Current numerical models such as FEM/DEM take much time for calculation. AI can shorten the calculation time and reduce errors of numerical method reduces

For these big interdisciplinary research challenges, we have many collaborators not only domestically but also internationally, including KIMS, KITECH, ADD, POSCO, RIST, CetaTech, Kyungwon, Siemens, Oregon State University, Mississippi State University, San Diego State University, University of Utah, Kyushu University, Sakarya University(Turkey), CAM(China), and so on.
