Research Interests
A major research area of the group has been the design and synthesis of macrocyclic systems for the self-assembly and molecular recognition of softer metal species such as silver(I), copper (I,II), mercury(II), zinc(II), cadmium(II), palladium(II), platinum(II) and gold(I-III) ions. Our primary object is to contribute to the programmed self-assembly of discrete supramolecular complexes and coordination networks based on sulfur-containing mixed donor macrocycles. As an extension of the studies just outlined, current research activity is also concerned with the application of selective reagent systems to the separation and/or sensing of particular metal ions. An extensive series of studies involves the metal ion discrimination via solvent extraction and transport across hydrophobic membranes. Additionally, the development of chromo- and fluorogenic receptors are one of the major fields we are focusing. Such chemosensors are especially attractive because guest determination can be carried out without the use of instrumentation. New developments include extensive studies of the use of such reagents immobilized on solid supports (such as silica nanotubes) through the collaboration work. Consequently, our research field covers multidispllinary area such as molecular design and organic synthesis of host species, metallo-supramolecular coordination chemistry, novel multinuclear coordination compounds, coordination polymers, self-assembly, crystal engineering, electrochemical sensors, chromo- and fluorogenic chemosonsor and photoluminescence materials.
